Rodriguez – Sugar Man (1970)

Today, a song about sad escape. Or a sad song about escape. Or a song about escaping sadness. Either way, it’s going nowhere. See how it it loops back on itself, whipping back and forth with that simple and mesmerizing motion a cat’s tail slices through the air. It’s raining sugar water and the trees are buckling with weight.

Rodriguez has a fascinating story – extraordinary in its resolution, utterly banal at heart. The contrast is like a spoon-full of bright white powder in a mug of pitch-dark coffee. Listen to his story on the “Searching for Sugar Man” documentary, from 2012. Enjoy the brew!
